Camping Kids - Important Safety Tips
By Roy Thomsitt
One of the very first things to remember to keep your kids safe during your next camping trip is to teach younger children to always stay within your eyesight and the older children within earshot. This simple rule will allow everyone to have a good time without worry. Also, instruct the kids as to what they are to do in the event they become lost or separated from you while hiking. If your kids are over the age of four or five, each of them can carry their own "survival kit" consisting of a water canteen, a compass and a small plastic whistle to wear around their neck. Three blows of the whistle is the standard distress signal to indicate "help" or "I'm lost." As we know, the weather can be rather unpredictable so take the time to check the local forecast in the area you'll be camping when planning your trip. Pack extra clothes, keeping in mind that children get colder faster than adults do, and remember items like rain ponchos or slickers and galoshes or boots to keep everyone dry and comfy in case it rains. Before even leaving for your trip, check to see that your first aid kit is stocked, full of supplies, and that no ointments or medicines are outdated or expired. Some of what you'll want to have in the kit include: - Adhesive tape - Antibiotic cream - Antiseptic solution or wipes - Band-aids, various sizes - Burn ointment - Calamine lotion - First aid manual - Instant cold packs - Sharp scissors - Sterile gauze - Thermometer - Tweezers for removing ticks or bee stingers Also be sure to have a list of phone numbers for the nearby emergency personnel, extra flashlights and batteries, waterproof matches, pocket knife, extra blankets, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Kids and Flashlights All kids love flashlights, and having one of their very own while on the camping trip will help them to feel more at ease while out in the woods in the dark. Kids will need their own flashlight for trips to the restroom, for walking safely around the campsite at night, for reading before bedtime, and also for putting on shadow puppet shows on the walls of the tent or camper. Teach the kids to be considerate campers while using their flashlights, taking care to never shine the light into someone else's campsite. |
