Camping Tips - Campfire Stew and Delegating Camping Tasks

Making Campfire Stew A fun and easy meal to try on your camping trip is called campfire stew. The ingredients you will need include ground beef or turkey, onions, carrots, potatoes, margarine or butter, and seasonings like salt and pepper. For each person, use one relatively large piece of aluminum foil and place one hamburger or turkey patty in the center and surround with pieces of sliced onions, potatoes, and carrots. Sprinkle the seasonings of your choice and add a few pats of butter or margarine to keep the vegetables from burning. Wrap up each packet tightly and carefully place down in the coals of the campfire as you would a potato. Depending on how long the fire has been roaring, the packets may be ready in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure to turn them every 10 minutes or so with a long fork or stick, and carefully remove to see if the meat is done. You'll need oven mitts to open up the foil and watch for steam escaping the packets upon opening. Delegating Tasks While Camping If you're going on a camping excursion with the whole family, get everyone in on the act, assigning tasks to each person based on their age and abilities, and start by writing everything down on a piece of paper including: - Setting up the tent
- Gathering firewood
- Hanging clotheslines, hammocks
- Digging latrines or garbage sumps, if necessary
- Cooking food
- Washing dishes
- Collecting water
- Cleaning the site before dark and before leaving
- Starting and monitoring the fire
- Breaking down camp |
