Camping Tips - Starting a Campfire

With a few wooden matches and some twigs, branches, and sticks, you'll have a cozy fire going in no time. Before starting, make sure you're allowed to have a fire in the area where you're camping and that there are no low hanging trees near the place you'll be building it. If there isn't a fire ring already provided, make your own to contain the ashes with a circle of rocks and small boulders. Start with a pile of twigs and dry leaves in the center of the ring, building a small teepee-like structure on top and around that. Keep building the "teepee" with twigs and dry sticks then drop a few lit matches into the center of the structure until you see sparks, then lightly fan with a piece of newspaper until the flames catch. You can also add rolled pieces of newspaper in place of twigs if you can't find enough for the kindling. Add larger pieces of wood once the flames are going, taking care not to use wood that's fresh or green as it will spark because of the sap. Also, never cut down trees for firewood and never try to start a campfire with lighter fluid, gasoline, or other combustible. Always make absolutely certain that the fire is completely out before going to bed at night, and be sure there are no large rocks or other items around the campfire that may cause someone to trip and fall. Extinguish campfires with water, slowly pouring it on the fire after the majority of the wood has burned, stoking and stirring the coals with a stick until both the fire and the embers have gone out. |
