Christmas Lights - Decorate with Garlands, Bows, Wreaths, and Other Pre Lit Decor
By Roy Thomsitt
If your home has a staircase or stairway that's easily able to be decorated, this is a great place for getting really creative with your holiday decorations, especially when it comes to using the many types of beautiful Christmas lights available today. Here are just a few things to consider for decorating your staircase, newel posts, or, even substituting and using the very same ideas for adorning the mantle, around the windows or the doorways with lights: Bows: Bows are always a perfect decoration to use for the Christmas season as they come in many different colors, textures, patterns, designs, and sizes. Simply twirl the thin wires of the bows around the light's wires spacing them evenly. Fruits and Flowers: Fake fruits and flowers are great for a country Christmas theme and can be used along with garland, grapevines, raffia or tinsel along with the twinkling lights. Garland: Garland can actually be made from a wide variety of materials, or you can buy premade garland also in a number of styles, colors, and textures and use alone or with embellishments. Plain Lights: If your staircase or steps are near the tree or the mantle and you don't want these decorations to interfere or minimize the others, consider using only plain lights to illuminate the area, preferably all in one color for a neat, uniform look. This is especially beautiful if you have a Nativity on the mantle as white lights will shine down upon the display just as the star of Bethlehem did on that night so long ago. Ribbon: Ribbons, either premade or handmade are wonderful decorations for Christmas time as they can be incorporated into any type of décor or theme, and much like bows, can be found in just about any color imaginable. Swags: Make your own swags out of netting or tulle using a few pieces of florist's wire to neatly tie everything together and some ribbons or bows to hide the wires. Some things you could add as embellishments include Christmas ornaments, birds, candy or candy canes, holly, pine and evergreens, berries, pinecones, or even photos of the family or this year's Christmas cards. Wreaths: If you do have a newel post at the top or bottom of the stairs, hang a wreath that's adorned with decorations and small Christmas lights. Or, use smaller wreaths going up and down the railing with or without lights. To make things simpler, and a whole lot neater when it comes time to taking down the Christmas decorations, use artificial wreaths that you can even completely redecorate from one year to the next if you decide to change your overall theme or color schemes. Once decorating the inside of your home is finished, don't forget to get those outdoor Christmas lights hung up as well!
