Great Christmas Eve Traditions
By Roy Thomsitt
Almost everyone has certain traditions and rituals they observe on the night before Christmas, some with deep meanings that are steeped in centuries of time, and others that were started within their very own family. Christmas Eve is the perfect time to start new traditions in your home, whether they're some small part of the overall celebration or the foods you eat or the way you decorate the house. Christmas Eve Dinner Depending on your family's nationality or heritage, the foods you prepare for Christmas Eve dinner may vary greatly from that of your neighbor's, but one thing remains the same, the delicious fare we enjoy on this night of the year is certainly like no other. If you want to save yourself a lot of time on Christmas Day, especially if you'll be hosting a houseful of relatives, make the ham or turkey or whatever you're having for the main course the night before. Likewise for casseroles and salads that can all be prepared beforehand. This way, you'll be able to enjoy a special Christmas Eve dinner and save yourself some time in the kitchen while you're busy preparing for the guests to arrive. Decking the Halls Although today most people decorate their homes and Christmas trees long before Christmas Eve arrives, if you really want to celebrate the holiday following an old tradition, or if you're just pressed for time, wait until then to do the bulk of your decorating, as well as trimming the tree. Long ago, the tree was freshly cut and brought in to decorate on Christmas Eve, of course, this isn't an option if you enjoy putting up decorations just after Thanksgiving is over. Start a brand new tradition by saving one room or area of the house to decorate on the night before Christmas as you listen to carols, sip egg nog and share in the joy of the season with family and friends. 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Full of anticipation and great excitement, children enjoy Christmas Eve probably the most of all, and they're also at their most well-behaved as Santa is still watching to see that everyone is being nice and not naughty. Rent, make, or buy a Santa Claus suit and have a friend or relative surprise the kids with a surprise visit on Christmas Eve. Fill Santa's "sack" with coloring books, crayons, pens, pencils, notebooks, and inexpensive finds from the dollar store to pass out to the children. After the festivities have died down a bit, have everyone settle in to listen to a reading of the classic poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore. Even better, if the weather allows, gather in the garden and sing carols too, under the outside Christmas lights
