Using Christmas Ornaments to Decorate Throughout the Home

By Roy Thomsitt

One of the very best things about Christmas ornaments is that most of us manage to collect several of them over the years, many of which hold some special meaning or sentimental value. But, since most households have just one Christmas tree it's often hard to display each and every one of the ornaments, especially if they are of varying themes or sizes, so how can you enjoy them all without overwhelming or taking away from the beauty of the tree?

Here are just a few ideas for using Christmas ornaments to decorate and display all throughout the house, and throughout this most joyous season of the year:

1. Learn the simple technique of decoupage and recycle last year's Christmas cards by affixing them to an old shoebox, milk carton, cardboard box, coffee can, or just about any type of container you can think of.

Take your newly decorated item and fill it with the Christmas ornaments of your choice. Since this type of display doesn't use a see-through container, it's best to use plainer ornaments so their beauty won't be wasted. Carefully wrap your decoupaged container, or even use it for safely storing the ornaments away until next year.

2. If you have a mantle, there's probably no better place in the home to display Christmas ornaments, and if you have any that center around the Holy Nativity scene, you could also add a small crèche or manger along with figurines of Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. Add garland, tinsel, or small, white Christmas lights to accentuate the ornaments.

3. Inexpensive glass bowls are perfect for grouping like types of ornaments together. Fill the bottoms of the bowls with any number of decorative embellishments, including sparkling garland or tinsel, fresh cranberries, clear marbles or pieces of stones or polished glass for an extra dazzling effect.

If the bowls are large enough, place pillar candles in the centers surrounded by the ornaments, just be sure there's nothing flammable in the bottom of the bowls. If you don´t have pillars, use tapers inside of small holders that will be invisible when you add the ornaments.

4. Add interest to your chandelier by tying a few ornaments with matching ribbon all around the fixture. Whether you have a larger chandelier hanging in the foyer or entryway or a smaller one in the dining room or hall, any type can be beautifully decorated, especially with ornaments that will reflect the light and add to the chandelier's existing appeal.

Using the colors of your overall Christmas decorating scheme, alternate an ornament of each one around the chandelier using a neutral colored ribbon or a few pieces of tulle, provided the pieces are lightweight enough, of course.

5. Colorfully wrap fake presents using gift boxes or plain cardboard boxes and adorn the tops with ornaments attached with coordinating ribbons. Display your "gifts" under the tree until Christmas morning arrives, or place them on tables as well as in the corners of the rooms.
